The Dos and Don'ts of Treating Learning Disabilities

About Me

The Dos and Don'ts of Treating Learning Disabilities

When my youngest child was diagnosed with a learning disability, I immediately started looking for everything I could learn about it. I knew that there was a lot of information available about the disability, but I found a lot of conflicting information about what works and does not work in dealing with the disability. I talked to a few other parents and they were left feeling the same confusion I was. I started this blog to help other parents understand what treatment options are available and what has and has not worked. I hope that by sharing this information, other families will get the help they need.

The Benefits Of Private Preschool For Special Needs Children And Single Parents

Raising and caring fore a child with special needs can be tough, even more so if you are a single parent. You may have many fears about leaving your little one with strangers, especially if he or she has never been away from you much. However, for a single parent, your need for a break and help with your child may be greater than that of a couple. Check out these benefits of enrolling your special needs toddler in a private preschool.

Socialization With Other Children Matters A Lot

When your child spends time around other children, he or she learns how to communicate and share. This can be especially important for a special needs child that is also an only child. Playing with toys and learning to share provides your child with healthy interaction that will benefit him or her later in life. The same is true abut getting a feel for communicating with others. Many special needs children have trouble communicating their feelings and needs to other people. Being around other children can help your special needs child figure out the best way for communicating his or her needs to other people. If your special needs child is only around you most of the time, he or she will also get the benefit of being around other adults.

Your Child Will Learn How To Make Real Life Choices

When it comes to making real life choices, many parents of special needs children worry about their child's ability to do so. In a private preschool setting, your child is given the opportunity to make choices that will help mold him or her for serious choices later in life. For example, when your child is at home, you may fix him or her lunch and serve it only because you he or she likes that particular food. In a preschool setting, your little will be given choices about what he or she wants to eat for lunch. Learning how to make little choices leads to the ability of making bigger, more important ones later on.

Self-Care Becomes More Important

Parents of special needs children often get in the habit of taking care of their childrens' hygienic needs. In a preschool setting, however, your child can learn how to so some self-care tasks on his or her own. For example, if you find you have a habit of washing your child's hands before he or she eats, you may be surprised when your child takes of that on his or her own after being in preschool. The same is true about tasks like wiping their mouth with a napkin while eating or being hygienic in the bathroom.

If you are nervous about enrolling your child in preschool, choosing one with specific classes for special needs children is a good idea. Be sure to check out the qualifications of the teachers before you make final choices.
